Sedation Dentist for St. Peters
Dr. Makwana and his St. Peters dentistry team strive to make every visit comfortable from start to finish, but in some cases, even the gentlest treatment and friendliest team aren’t enough to help patients relax. That’s why Dr. Makwana has advanced training and years of experience offering dental sedation. There are many reasons patients consider sedation dentistry, including:
- Dental phobia or anxiety
- Sensitive teeth, gums, or gag reflex that makes treatment painful
- Physical or cognitive dysfunctions that make dental treatments unsafe or uncomfortable
- The need for multiple or complex treatments that would typically not be completed comfortable in a single visit
We offer oral conscious and nitrous oxide sedation. Keep reading or contact us to find out more.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Possibly the most popular dental sedation option is oral conscious sedation. The sedatives begin to take effect before patients ever leave home, making it an ideal solution for those patients who experience severe dental phobia or anxiety. A prescription sedative is taken at a predetermined time prior to the appointment and creates an advanced state of relaxation. As the name suggests, patients remain awake throughout treatment, but sensations are diminished allowing them to receive care with minimal discomfort and stress. The effects do not wear off for many hours, and patients need a trusted friend or family member to drive them to and from our practice.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
One of the oldest forms of sedation, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a nasal mask during treatments and induces a euphoric state that earns it the nickname “laughing gas.” Dr. Makwana is able to adjust the dosage throughout procedures to produce the optimal level of relaxation. The effects of nitrous oxide sedation wear off quickly, which means patients are able to return to their daily activities right away with only minor side effects like mild headaches.
